Red acne spots even after the pimple is gone,why?

a lot of the time after a pimple is gone, i will still have a red spot where the pimple was, and this red spot will stay there for weeks and in some cases the area has stayed red for more than a month. Why? and how can i stop this? I use all kinds of acne creams but they dont help with the red spots.

I had the bad habit of picking on my breaking out pimples and therefore i have spots that are left like scars..is there anything i can do to help remove or atleast reduce those spots?? because putting on foundation or cancealer doesn’t help me cover it..they are really dark..
